What better way to start off the week than with a super cute project inspired by a design from Do It Yourself Magazine!? This item was originally designed to organize a home office however we thought it would be the perfect way to display place cards!
Supplies
1. 18"x12" Piece ofSheet Metal- Home Depot has a few different sizes however we felt this proportion worked out best. Please take extreme care as the edges are quite sharp. (Total quantity may depend on how many place cards you have to display)
2. Foam Brush
3. 18"x18" Paper- This could be substituted for self adhesive wallpaper or contact paper
4. 12- 1/2" Brads- These can be replaced with buttons, or dimensional stickers to match your overall wedding design concept (quantity should match total numbers of place cards needed for your wedding)
5. Frame Kit- Because the sheet metal is in an odd size, it requires a custom size frame. Michaels carries sectional frame kits you can use to create a custom frame
6. Mod Podge
7. Wire Cutters
8. Heavy Tape- We used electrical tape however you can easily replace this with duct tape, masking tape, or painters tape
9. Hot Glue Gun & Glue
*10. 12- 1/2" Round Magnets (not pictured here, sorry, but seen below in Step 5)- These can be found at Michaels as well (quantity should match total number of place cards you have to display)
Step 1
Let's protect your hands! Cut an 18" strip of heavy tape and fold over one edge of the sheet metal. Repeat with another 18" strip and follow with two 12" strips on each additional side until all edges are successfully covered
Step 2
Lightly dip your foam brush into the Mod Podge and brush Mod Podge on top of the tape along each length as shown above. With your paper face side down, carefully flip over the sheet metal and center your sheet metal while holding it just above the paper. Carefully place the sheet metal onto the backside of your paper pressing lightly along the perimeter. Flip the sheet metal over now that it has been joined with the paper and smooth out any air bubbles that may be on the front side
Step 3
Once all air bubbles are removed, flip your sheet metal overpaper covered side facing down. Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge on the sheet metal parallel to the sides with extra paper. Starting from the center (as shown above) fold over the extra paper onto the sheet metal and smooth out any air bubbles
Step 4
We chose brads because we found them covered in stylish fabrics that matched our paper color perfectly! However, feel free to use buttons, gems, or even dimensional flower stickers for this as well. If you find brads that you have to have (like we did, lol) then take each brad, open it, and use the wire cutters to remove the prongs (see inset photo)
Step 5
Using your hot glue gun, join each brad (or item of your choice) to it's own 1/2" magnet and set aside to cool
Step 6
While your magnets are drying, put the frame together using the instructions enclosed in the packaging, and insert your paper covered sheet metal
Finished Product
Ta da! Stand them on top of linen covered tables so they can lean against the wall (as most venues probably won't permit you to hang anything on the wall) or you can create larger versions and use easels. The best part!? Once your wedding is over these are extremely functional in a home office or kitchen for organization and they're also a great way to display photos in a bedroom or living area as well!
Be sure to check out the review coming up shortly!
