Sherry and John Petersik are "two young people falling in love with their first house" and YoungHouseLove is where they document all the happenings along their quest to renovate their first home with an endless amount of DIY projects. Their journey has become so popular that aside from being featured on HGTV, CNN, in The New York Times and on the cover of The Nest, they also write a regular column for Better Homes and Garden's Do It Yourself magazine!
How does that relate to us you ask? Well, two years ago when they got married they decided to carryout the most important day of their lives in true DIY fashion. Beginning with hosting the wedding at their home, creating all the decor, all the way to even cooking all the food! We thoroughly enjoyed reading about it so we jumped at the opportunity to interview them and here's what Sherry, the adorable bride, had to say, enjoy!
We asked: What were some of the factors that led you to do a DIY wedding?
She said:We're two cheap people who love each other and love a good challenge, so a DIY wedding was right up our alley. We don't believe you have to spend an arm and a leg to prove that you're meant to be, and sometimes a hand-crafted wedding on a budget is even more charming and personal than one than breaks the bank!
We asked: If you had to pick a favorite project, which one would it be and why?
She said:Hmm, that's so hard. We loved that we took the time to string those cheap Target bulb lights over the reception area, and we also really enjoyed the outcome of our cheap-o DIY clothesline with photos that chronicled our lives (as opposed to the more traditional wedding slide show). Oh and our bulb favors were super fun to put together and watch as our guests laughed at the photo strip and promised that they would plant the bulb in their garden. Two years later we still have people calling us and writing us to say that our "wedding flowers" are in bloom in their garden! [the captions in the film strip say, "Plant one..." "...On us" "Smooooch!"]
We asked: Which resource did you find most helpful?
She said: I think the best resource for planning our wedding was each other. It was easy to get overwhelmed by reading wedding magazines or websites, or swept up in the feeling that we had to pay more and do more and make the day this big grand event. Looking at each other and reminding one another that it was just a party in our backyard and it only had to be as complicated as we made it really kept us grounded and ultimately helped us create the perfect day for us, not for the Joneses.
We asked: Did any of your projects teach you a lesson you'd like to pass on to fellow DIY brides?
She said: Our overall lesson is sort of what we hinted at above. It's easy to get sucked into trying to do too much or create a day that's overly complicated, formal, or just not "you." We had a dream of something intimate and sweet in our backyard so whenever we felt ourselves getting pulled in the direction of something too fancy or involved we had to take a step back and remember that the goal was simple, simple, simple. It's funny that you have to work to have a simple day. It seems like it should be, well, simple. But for us it was all about paring down and only doing the things that we truly love and keeping the day feeling approachable and intimate.
We hope you enjoyed Sherry and John's wedding as much as we did. A special heartfelt thank you to Sherry for taking the time to talk to us!! And be sure to stop by YoungHouseLove for DIY wedding inspiration and much, much more!
